Dangerous Goods


Civil Aviation Regulations place restrictions on some personal items that, when transported by air, can put people’s health, safety or property at risk – commonly referred to as Dangerous Goods.

The carriage of prohibited Dangerous Goods on board Pelican Airlines aircraft, intentional or otherwise, is illegal and may result in prosecution and severe penalties.

The following items are NOT permitted on board a Pelican Airlines aircraft under any circumstances;

Petrol or gas engine equipment either new or used such as a chainsaw, lawn mower, trimmer
Self-Balancing Boards
Cigarette lighters with blue flame and cigar lighters
Spillable batteries
Gas cylinders or cartridges
‘Strike anywhere’ matches
Fire extinguishers
Explosives such as fireworks, flares, sparklers, party poppers
Flammable liquids and solids such as paint, lighter fluid, thinners, lacquer, fuels
Bleaching powders and peroxides
Poisons such as weed killers, insecticides,
Pool cleaning products
Flammable solids such as fire starters, moth balls
Fertilizers
Fibre glass repair kits and resins
‘Meals ready to eat’ (MRE)
Copra (coconut meal)
Some Dangerous Goods are permitted to travel on board Pelican Airlines aircraft provided the requirements outlined in the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations Table 2.3.A are met. In some cases prior approval from Pelican Airlines will be required. The following information summarises those requirements.

UPDATED: Self-balancing boards

The carriage of 'self-balancing boards' (also known as; hover boards, air boards, smart scooters, mini Segways, air wheels, uni wheels etc) is not permitted on Pelican Airlines flights as either checked or carry-on (inc Green Tag) baggage.

 

Aerosols in Division 2.2, with no subsidiary risk, for sporting or home use.

When in retail packagings, containing more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol by volume, in receptacles not exceeding 5L, with a total net quantity per person of 5L.

Ammunition securely packaged (in Div. 1.4S, UN 0014 only), in quantities not exceeding 5kg gross weight per perso for that person's own use. Allowances for more than one person must not be combined into one or more packages.
Firearms must be unloaded and packed in a locked case.
All ammunition and firearms must be declared at check-in and a valid firearms license presented.
Pelican Airlines requires 48hrs notice for the carriage of Ammunition and/or Firearms

Limit one (1) per person, containing a cylinder of compressed gas in Div. 2.2. May also be equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism containing less than 200mg net of Div. 1.4S. The backpack must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated. The airbags within the backpacks must be fitted with pressure relief valves.

Provided that the battery is disconnected, the battery terminals are protected from short circuits and the battery is securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid.

Camping stoves and fuel containers for camping stoves that have contained a flammable liquid fuel may be carried provided the fuel tank of the camping stove, and/or fuel container has been completely drained of all liquid fuel and action has been taken to nullify the danger.

In quantities not exceeding 2.5kg per person who used to pack perishables, provided the baggage (Package) permits the release of carbon dioxide gas.

Disabling devices such as mace, pepper spray, etc. containing an irritant or incapacitating substance are forbidden on the person, in checked and carry-on baggage.
Electro shock weapons (e.g. Tasers) containing dangerous goods such as explosives, compressed gases, lithium batteries, etc. are forbidden in carry-on baggage or checked baggage or on the person.

eCigarettes or electronic cigarettes are a Portable Electronic Device used in place of a lighted cigarette for the inhalation of nicotine vapours.
Applicable safety requirements relating to the carriage of Spare Lithium batteries apply.
Spare batteries must be individually protected so as to prevent short circuits (by placement in original retail packaging or by otherwise insulating terminals; e.g. by taping over exposed terminals or by placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch).

Portable electronic devices (for example cameras, cellular phones, laptop computers and camcorders) powered by fuel cell systems, and spare fuel cartridges may be provided:
  • The fuel cell complies with IEC PAS 62282-61 Ed. 1 (and marked accordingly)
  • Fuel cell cartridges must not be refillable by the user
    • for liquids, 200ml
    • for liquefied gases, 120ml for non metallic fuel cell cartridges or 200ml for metal fuel cell cartridges
  • no more than two spare fuel cartridges may be carried by a passenger

Up to one (1) per passenger, provided that the safety cover is securely fitted over the heating element. These hair curlers must not be used on board the aircraft at any time. Gas refills for such curlers are not permitted in checked or carry-on baggage.

Heat producing articles such as battery operated equipment, underwater torches and soldering equipment, which if accidentally activated will generate extreme heat and may cause fire, may be carried in carry on baggage only.

Insulated packaging containing refrigerated liquid nitrogen is fully absorbed in a porous material and intended for the transport, at low temperature of non-dangerous products, are permitted provided the design of the insulated packaging would not allow the build-up of pressure within the container and would not permit the release of any refrigerated liquid nitrogen irrespective of the orientation of the packaging.

Battery must remain installed in the equipment and ON/OFF switch must be protected.

Safety matches (one small packet) or a cigarette lighter that does not contain unabsorbed liquid fuel, other than liquefied gas, intended for use by an individual when carried on the person.

Security-type attache cases, cash boxes, cash bags, etc. incorporating dangerous goods, such as llithium batteries and/or pyrotechnic material, except as provided in 2.3.2.6 are NOT PERMITTED

Non-radioactive medicinal or toilet articles (including aerosols) such as hair sprays, perfumes, colognes and medicines containing alcohol.
The total net quantity of all above mentioned articles must not exceed 2kg or 2L, and the net quantity of each signle article must not exceed 0.5kg or 0.5L. Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of the contents
